Every year, on 4 February, the whole world unites in the fight against cancer. World Cancer Day is an initiative of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), uniting over 800 organizations across 155 countries.
Cancer remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality, accounting for 8.2 million deaths in 2012. Its’ incidence grows year on year and it is expected that annual cancer cases will rise by about 70%, from 14 million in 2012 to 22 million within the next two decades. Hence World Cancer Day’s 2015 tagline: ‘Not beyond us’. This global event wants to raise awareness about this disease, focusing on four main stages across its’ continuum: adopting a healthy lifestyle by means of prevention, early detection, worldwide accessibility of treatment and maximization of post-treatment quality of life. Since its’ foundation, IBA has put its’ shoulders underneath these last two focus points. Knowing that 523 (52%) out of every 1,000 new cancer patients is going to need radiation therapy as part of their treatment and 120 patients (23%) out of these will require re-treatment, IBA’s proton therapy solution is bound to play a major role in this fight against cancer. Growing clinical evidence shows that this treatment modality is perfectly fit to assure lower dose delivery to normal tissues, reducing the risk for secondary malignancies and overall side effects, thus proving beneficial for the quality of life outcome. The superiority of proton radiation therapy for pediatric cancers is already well established and recognized, while technological evolutions continue to improve treatment practice and broaden the scope of clinical indications. Studies reveal that some 20% of oncology patients could gain profit from this treatment modality. The fight continues, and IBA does not back down.
